My CSS Reboot - I. Preparing the Canvas

In the first part of this series I will be explaining how I prepared to start development of V3. I decided to develop locally, whilst I figure out the best way to switch hosts without causing too much disruption.

Apache, PHP, mySQL and all that jazz

I had Apache, PHP and mySQL installed on the old rig, and have yet to get round to doing it on this computer.

I chose to use WAMP, which installs everything you could need to start developing Wordpress. You can download WAMP from the project site. Installation was a breeze, took all the pain away that I experienced from installing Apache last time. I then followed this quick tutorial in order to set up phpMyAdmin.

I then used phpMyAdmin to create a new database (blogcriticalv3), ready to install Wordpress.

Installing Wordpress

I grabbed the latest version from the Wordpress website. This happens to be 2.0.1 (though I hear 2.0.2 is just around the corner, we shall see).

Wordpress really is the easiest thing to install. Literally only takes 5 minutes, fill in database information, name you blog, and give your email address. That is all it takes.

With all that complete, I’m ready to begin development. I will take a while to familiarise myself with the new Wordpress interface, I have to admit I’m impressed, it looks really nice.

Update 28.03.2006 - 2.0.2 WAS just around the corner, so i have now updated to 2.0.2

For the layman WAMP refers to Windows/Apache/MySQL/PHP while LAMP would be a Linux server/Apache/MySQL/PHP. And sometimes people say that “the P is” Perl, Python, or any other web app language that begins with a P.

    Beautiful site!
