Balance in the Universe
I am a geek; there is no doubt about it, I’m a geek through and through, and one thing that I, as a geek use on a day to day basis is the internet. Heck, I’m a web designer after all, it’s my job. So when I don’t have access to the internet, I start to get a bit edgy, sure it’s a little sad, and I probably should get a life, and go for a long walk or something.
Apparently BT doesn’t seem to understand my daily requirement of the inter-web, below is a diary of the torture they have put me through.
Tuesday 23rd May
Return home from work to find that the phone line is dead. Hoped it was just a blip and that it would come back to life in a little while.
Wednesday 24th May
Wake up, line is still dead. Mother decided to call up BT to find out what is going on. She didn’t even get to speak to a human, after running a series of tests it is declared that it is a problem with our hardware. I don’t know how they came to this conclusion. I also don’t know the chance of both a router and a phone malfunctioning simultaneously. Later Dad calls BT turns out this time they decide there is a fault, and that it will be fixed by the 26th.
Thursday 25th May
Wake up, line still dead. Get to work and give BT a call. A warning at the start says that I will be charged for the call, because I am on a mobile. This to me seems like a bit of an oversight, surely most of the calls to the BT fault line are from mobile phones, seeing as the landline is presumably not working! I skipped the phone call, in favour of www.bt.com/faults where I was able to register the fault. I was told that (by the magic of the internet) I would be contacted on the 26th.
Friday 26th May
Wake up, line still dead. I’m getting to see a pattern here. Checked the status of my fault online at work, it is being looked into apparently. So I get home, pick up the receiver in the hope that the phone will be alive. No dice, still dead. I gave BT another call, managed to speak to a human. Seems that an engineer was sent out to check the exchange, but something was damaged so they could not repair the fault. Now, excuse me if I’m getting confused here, but surely the job of the engineer is to fix the damage? Thus restoring the service, maybe I’m just being old fashioned.
The bloke at BT told me that they would keep me updated by sending me text messages. Not much of a comfort I’ll be honest, he also assured me that engineers work on the weekends. But this is a bank holiday weekend, we shall see. I received my first text message, hardly useful though.
“Fault investigation underway. We will update you when we have more information.”
Saturday 27th May
Wake up at Carries, it’s the weekend! Receive a text message so get out of bed to read it, as I walk across the room I say in jest “ah, this will be BT” open text message. Wow it is BT! The line is fixed. Balance in the universe is restored.
So I’m back online, hooked up to the information super highway as it where. It better stay hooked up, or someone at BT will be receiving a phone call from a very agitated web designer.

Glad your back online dude, its a horrible lonely and empty feeling inside when the webbioconnex is down.
